Furnace

Let’s face it, the economy is not in a state where we can afford to waste money on hiring a professional to take care of the main parts of a furnace when you can easily learn what they do and how to maintain/repair them yourself.

When you can save money on maintenance and repairs of your furnace, you will be able to spend that money on something else that you were needing to purchase and saving money in today’s world seems to be one of the most important things that a man or woman can do for themselves as well as their family.

This mini-guide will help you better understand the main parts of a furnace and what they do.

Air Ducts/Vents

This is basically the delivery method of your warm air that the furnace generates in order to heat your house. In order to make sure your air ducts and vents work properly, they need to be free from any buildups that commonly occur over time.

Flu

This is simply what your furnace uses in order to release any air that could be harmful if disbursed in your home. For this reason, the flu leads outside so that it doesn’t have a chance of harming the air quality of your home when it is being heated.

Gas Shutoff Valve/Gas Line

This is where the gas is delivered. Making sure that there aren’t any leaks in the gas line is very important and could be harmful to your wellbeing if ignored. The gas shutoff valve helps you shut off the gas to the furnace at the end of winter or while performing any maintenance/repair on your furnace.

This is located near the bottom of your furnace.

Pilot Light

This is what ignites the burner in order to heat the air that is to be disbursed through your air ducts/vents. Usually this is located at the bottom of a furnace behind an access panel that either detaches or swings open.

Burner

This is the main heating element of a furnace and is located near the bottom of the furnace behind an access panel. You can find this near the pilot light. What happens is the burner heats the air that passes through your furnace before the blower sends it through the ducts for distribution throughout your home.

Thermo-Coupler

The thermo-couple is a safety device that is right by the pilot light which is meant to shut off the gas delivery if the pilot light goes out or the electronic igniter fails to ignite. This assures that excess gas doesn’t seep into your house and pose a health hazard for you or your family.

Thermostat

This is simply the control board of your furnace and is found mounted on the wall of your home. The location varies, depending on where it was originally installed. This helps you regulate how warm your house is going to be kept by the furnace.

These are the main parts that contribute to the operation of your furnace. Hopefully, by understanding the roles of these components, you can have a simpler approach when it comes to taking good care of your furnace and troubleshooting issues for yourself.
